Chapter 4 –Adam’s Headache

˜ ˜ ˜

Along the way Rory explained how he and a group of sixth-class children had been down the road egging some houses. There were streams of egg yolk, rotten kiwis and mandarins stuck to his coat as he recounted the many houses that had felt the wrath of his powerful throw. Adam shook his head in disapproval, but he knew that his own behaviour hadn’t been at all good. He realised that someone could be seriously hurt back in the house.

Just as Adam was thinking about going back to the Fogs’ house to put his mind at rest, he heard a frightening roar from behind, and Rory came to an abrupt stop. Adam looked around and caught sight of a big, shadowy figure coming in their direction. The figure appeared to be wearing a Halloween mask. Rory had to look twice as the face looked uncannily human. The person had long frizzly hair and was wearing a wide-open black coat like something a magician would wear.

Rory stopped his fast-paced chewing and stood still as a statue.

“What – is – that?!” he cried out nervously, moving back to Adam and tapping his shoulder. “Who do you think that is dressed up?”

“Is that someone’s actual face?” replied Adam, puzzled.

As soon as Adam went to take off his mask for a better look, the being advanced rapidly towards them making a sound like it was possessed. Adam’s heart began to pump faster and faster. Was this someone from the house where Adam had thrown the firework? Or was it the man who hadn’t come to the door earlier and who now had seen his wall vandalised with gooey Halloween spray?

He didn’t want to wait to find out.

Without delay, he signalled Rory to start running back home as quick as possible. Rory didn’t need to be asked twice. Clutching the bag of treats, he raced down the street. Club, seeing everyone running, thought the boys were playing a game of catch and darted off, soon leading the way.
